Pets must be properly cared for. The owner bears full responsibility for them. If a sharp change has occurred in the dog's behavior, this fact cannot be ignored. He may indicate an illness.
How a dog can get hurt
It is very difficult to watch your pet get sick and suffer. It is difficult to help the dog because it cannot tell what happened. It is necessary to learn to understand animals perfectly and be able to provide first aid. Fractures are common in dogs. They arise as a result of falls, bruises, blows. During the winter season, the dog can slip unsuccessfully. If there are diseases of the skeletal system (osteodystrophy, rickets), then fractures are common.
Signs of a fracture
Fractures can be open and closed, and the bone can be damaged in whole or in part. At the same time, there is a rupture of muscles, tendons, nerves and blood vessels. With a fracture of a limb, the dog cannot lean on it and moves on three legs. If the skull is damaged, then blood flows from the ears and nose. A sign of damage to the hip bones is the inability to lean on the forelimbs. When probing the damaged area, the dog experiences severe pain. In the first hours, edema appears, which may not subside for several days. Due to severe blood loss and acute pain, the pet may experience shock.
First aid
The owner must be able to provide first aid. It consists in applying a splint over the fracture site, which should be fixed and immobilized. To do this, you need to find a ruler or a board, wrap it with several layers of cotton wool and tie it to the body with a bandage. An arbitrary splint is applied so as to fix the joints above and below the fracture. If the humerus or hip bone is damaged, then you need to press the bent limb to the body. In the event of a spinal fracture, it is necessary to fix the animal sideways on a flat plate. Use belts for this. An open fracture requires pretreatment of the wound. Intramuscular administration of diphenhydramine or analgin will help alleviate the condition of the dog.
Treatment period
Further treatment should be carried out by a doctor. After an X-ray examination, it will be clear which bone is damaged, whether surgery is required or not. You should not be afraid of surgery, since sometimes this is a forced measure that will help the pet run as before after the recovery period. The most effective treatment is started on the first day after the injury. If the operation is not required, then a plaster cast is applied. Subject to all the prescriptions of the doctor, with proper care of the dog, it will soon recover.
