Have you decided to have a pet and opted for a guinea pig? This is an incredibly calm and funny furry animal that does not require special care and close attention. However, when choosing an animal, the question will certainly arise: how to distinguish the sex of guinea pigs?
Instructions
Step 1
First, you need to correctly determine the age of the animal. Most often, difficulties in determining sex arise if the mumps is at a young age. Pet stores offer both young and adults. A young pig is considered up to one year old. Having dealt with the age of the animal, you will be able to determine its gender much faster. The guinea pig is a very shy animal, so you need to take it in your arms to determine the sex slowly and carefully, without making any sudden movements.
Step 2
The distance between the genital opening and the anal in females is much shorter than in males. This "comparative" method is suitable if you need to determine the sex of several animals at once - having only one animal available, you simply will have nothing to compare with.
Step 3
A more reliable method: take the animal in your arms and gently turn it belly up. It is better to hold the animal's body with your fingers right under the front legs - there it will be more comfortable. The palm of the other hand must hold the lower part of the body. Then you need to lightly press on the lower abdomen. Under your fingers, if it is a male, you will feel a small penis, and if it is a female, then a small oblong slit in the form of the Latin letter "Y". Don't press hard.
Step 4
With an adult animal, such executions will not have to be carried out. A routine examination of the genital area will help. In adult males, a small penis will protrude above the foreskin, while in the female (if she is not in estrus), the same Latin "Y" is observed.
