Benefit and harm

Dairy products are rich in nutrients and vitamins. Dairy products include phosphorus, B vitamins, calcium, coenzyme. The main consumers of milk are invariably children, nursing and pregnant women, as well as elderly people.

Like humans, dogs need dairy products, which are a source of essential calcium and protein. But milk can also bring harm: bloating, indigestion, can help remove calcium from the body. Keep this in mind when adding foods of this category to your pet's diet.

Age features of dogs

Newborn puppies drink their mother's milk for up to 4 months, after which they switch to soft and dry, solid foods or regular foods, but with some restrictions. As the puppy gets older, you should stop giving him milk, because the enzyme secreted in the first months of life to break down the lactose contained in dairy products is less and less secreted by the pancreas with age. Milk consumption of an adult dog can lead to loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, general weakness and rapid fatigue.

Dogs in rare cases are capable of digesting lactose and taking milk-containing products without harm to their health even as adults. But pets that have lost this ability, as a rule, refuse milk themselves.

Whether to give the puppy cow's milk

Complementary feeding of newborn puppies begins in cases when the mother has lost milk or when there is a shortage of milk in too large litter.

It is worth giving milk to breeds of large and medium-sized dogs up to 3-4 months, to representatives of dwarf breeds - no more than 1, 5 months. The amount of cow's milk added to the diet depends on the weight. If the mother of puppies does not exceed 10 kg, then 70 ml of milk is given per day for the first 2 days, then for 7 days, 90 ml per day is given. If the puppy is from a large dog weighing 30 kg or more, then 170 ml for the first two days, for the next 7 days - 230 ml each.

With a shortage of breast milk, it is necessary to take into account not only the general rules, but also the individual characteristics of the puppies. In no case should they be overfed; you also need to make sure that the pets are full. This is easy to determine, because the first few months of life, the puppy is in a dormant state almost all the time. If he behaves restlessly, whines, it is worth increasing the amount of milk consumed by him.

Another rule that should be observed: in order for cow's milk to be as close as possible in composition to mother's milk, you need to add a raw chicken egg in a proportion of 1 piece per 0.5-1 liter.
