The smallest deer on the planet are considered kanchili. These amazing animals are otherwise called mouse deer or Asian kanchily. The animal belongs to the order of artiodactyls of the deer family.
The deer were very tiny. Their height can vary, depending on the species, from 20 to 70 cm. They weigh from one and a half to eight kg. An interesting feature of these artiodactyls is that they have no horns at all.
The hair of the kanchil is soft and fluffy, not very long, gray-brown in color, sometimes with an orange tint.
There are only five types of kanchili deer. Big kanchil is better known, it weighs an average of six kilograms, and its body length is 70 centimeters. Otherwise, this species is called a large deer or deer napu. Small kanchil is 20 centimeters high and weighs about one and a half kilograms. The alternative name of the species is the Javanese small kanchil.
The habitat of the kanchili is determined by Southeast Asia. Kanchils live in dry forests and thickets. They hide all the time, lead a nocturnal and solitary life. If you chase the kanchil, he will hide, and if you grab him, he will start biting. The animals have rather large canines.
Rut at kanchili in June and July. Pregnancy lasts 150 days. Two deer are born.
Nowadays, these are endangered animals. They eat grass, leaves, mushrooms, fruits, insects.
Another interesting feature of these animals is that their hooves do not prevent them from climbing trees. And in case of danger, they sometimes hide in the water, they swim well and can walk along the bottom, while not sticking out for a long time.
