Guinea pigs can be called ideal pets, as they do not require much space, they do not need to be walked, they do not spoil anything and do not damage the family budget. When buying a pet, the question arises: take a boy or a girl? There is no fundamental difference if you are going to have one animal; but when choosing two guinea pigs, you need to be able to determine the sex, so as not to get a whole nursery.
Instructions
Step 1
Male from female guinea pigs can be distinguished when they are more than three weeks old. Examine the genitals of the animal. To do this, turn it over with its stomach up, place it on your palm, firmly holding your back. The guinea pig's feet should point up. Look at the place where the genitals are located - in guinea pigs, it is Y-shaped. If the distance between him and the anus is small, then this is a male, while in females, the genitals and anus are far enough from each other. Look at a few of the pigs for a comparison.
Step 2
If outwardly it was not possible to determine the differences, take the rodent by the front legs and turn it over onto its back. With your right hand, grasp the lower back of the animal, pressing with your thumb on the area above the genitals. Do not press hard, gradually increase the pressure slightly. If a bulge is felt under the finger, then this is a boy - his penis has not yet poked out, but it should be felt. It can be seen if you look closely: it looks like a point at the apex of the Y-shaped gap, the leg of which is directed towards the tail. Females have no bulges - only a slit of the same shape is visible.
Step 3
If you still have doubts about the sex of the guinea pig, then pull the skin on the genitals to the abdomen, holding the animal in the same way as in the previous paragraph. If it is a male, then you will see his genitals. The female will have visible part of the mucous membrane.
Step 4
You can also determine the sex by the appearance of the animal, but this is easier to do when the pigs are already old enough and have reached at least adolescence. A row of nipples does not mean anything, all representatives of guinea pigs have them. Males are larger than females, have a stronger bone and a higher withers.
