The question of the sex of the pet is one of the most significant for the future owner. This is especially important if more than one pig is being purchased. But sometimes it is not easy to determine the sex of the cubs, even for pet shop sellers. Take a few minutes to examine the animal, and in the future, its gender will not be an unpleasant surprise for you.
Instructions
Step 1
Gently take the animal you like by the back and place it in your palm. Turn it with its belly towards you. Talk affectionately to your pig in a low voice so it doesn't get agitated.
Step 2
Open the bottom of the guinea pig's belly by sliding the skin up. Press lightly on the lower abdomen to expose the genitals. This should be done as delicately as possible so as not to hurt or frighten the animal.
Step 3
If you scare your pig, leave it alone for a while. The animal will protest, bite, and will not allow itself to be carefully examined. Frightened little pigs still do not know how to bite, but they begin to squeak loudly and plaintively.
Step 4
Examine the guinea pig's lower abdomen carefully. When pressed in males, a genital organ similar to a grain of rice appears in the groin. It may not come out, but can be felt under the skin. In females, the genital organ resembles an oval, tapering to the tail, inside which folds in the shape of the letter Y are visible. The genitals of females of any age are smaller than those of males.
Step 5
Examine adult gilts by turning their belly towards you. Do not press them on the groin - in adult animals, genders are clearly visible to the naked eye. In males, a noticeable rounded scrotum grows, which is located at the base of the tail. In adult short-haired animals, as well as skinny pigs, the scrotum with testicles will be clearly visible even from the rear.
Step 6
Try to distinguish between males and females by indirect signs. If the pigs have sleeping houses, you will notice that the female guinea pig in the house is trying to accumulate food, hay, rags, and make it cozy. The male, on the other hand, is inclined to throw everything out of his house.
Step 7
Observe the behavior of the pigs. Males are more active, interesting, mobile, they like to play more. Females, on the other hand, have a calm behavior, less bite, and are friendly to children.
Step 8
When choosing an animal, keep in mind that adult males always grow larger than females. A mature male weighs 800-1600 g, and a female 600-1200 g.
