For a full-fledged social contact, one communication with a person is not enough for a home budgerigar. Therefore, sooner or later, the owner of a male parrot thinks about purchasing a female, and vice versa. The task is complicated by the fact that these birds choose a mate for themselves, guided not only by the instinct of procreation, but also by personal sympathy.

Step 1
Choose a pair for your parrot by color and age. Ideally, both birds should have similar colored plumage. The optimal difference in years between budgerigars is two to four years in favor of the male. If the female turns out to be older or larger, she can peck at the partner, especially if he has not yet had a moulting period, marking the transition to adult avian life.
Step 2
Take a closer look at the character of your pet, and choose a pair for him, based on these observations. If the parrot is sociable, an equally lively friend will suit him. Keep in mind that matriarchy reigns among parrots: most likely, the female will, jokingly or seriously, bully the male, so you should not pair a quiet, fearful gentleman with an overly active lady: there is a risk that she will bite him in the literal and figurative sense of this the words.

Try to get a second budgerigar from a trusted retailer with a return guarantee if it doesn't get along with your existing pet. Like people, parrots have their likes and dislikes, so it is almost impossible to predict their reaction to the appearance of a new “family member” in the house. However, even bosom friends, lovebirds, can sometimes quarrel and peck each other. Therefore, return a bird that has not taken root in you to its owner only in case of open aggression from one (or both) of the wards.
Step 4
Pay special attention to the adaptation period. In the first few days, the parrots will get to know each other, get used to each other. During this period, roles are distributed in a pair (the female most often becomes the main one). Ignore small skirmishes and struggles for roost or food, but make sure that each bird has its own feeder and, if possible, its own toys. If the relationship between the male and the female does not improve in any way, and one of them mercilessly pecks at the other, do not wait for everything to "endure and fall in love." Bring the new parrot back to the store and try to start over. These birds can be picky in choosing a pair, but with their chosen one or chosen one, they remain for life.
