A guinea pig needs a lot of water. She drinks often, especially if the food is not juicy enough. However, an animal that has just been brought into the house needs some time to get used to and learn to navigate in a new space for it. It is possible that the pig will not immediately understand how to use an unusual drinker for her. In this case, she must be taught.
It is necessary
- - cell;
- - automatic drinker;
- - fresh water.
Instructions
Step 1
Set up an “apartment” for your pig before you bring it home. The cage should have clean bedding, a full trough and a drinking bowl, which is a container with a special tip. Attach the drinker high enough for the animal to reach the tip without effort. The house can be left out for the first time. Let the pig get used to the environment and to you, and after a few days, you can provide her with shelter.
Step 2
Release the animal into the cage and see how it behaves. Guinea pigs are quite shy, but some immediately understand where what is in their new home. If the animal had exactly the same drinker in the same place, it will quickly understand that the new one contains the water that it needs so much.
Step 3
When you see that the guinea pig is clearly looking for water, but cannot find it, bring it closer to the drinker. Do this so that the animal lightly pokes its nose into the tip. But don't overdo it, the nose should only touch the metal ball.
Step 4
If the pig still does not know what to do, put it next to the drinker. Touch the tip and wet your finger. Bring it to the pig's mouth and let it lick. Repeat the procedure several times.
Step 5
Remember that your guinea pig needs to get water regularly. She usually starts drinking from the drinking bowl as soon as she is shown it. But there are not very smart or completely shy animals who do not immediately learn the lesson. Do not be angry with the pig and do not think that she is stupid. Be patient. After a few days, you will certainly achieve success, because guinea pigs get used to new owners quite easily.
Step 6
When your guinea pig gets used to the environment and becomes completely tame, start letting her go for walks. Make sure that during this time she can drink if she wants. Place the cage on the floor, and attach the drinker so that it is on the outside of the cage and at the usual height for the animal.
