When there is an adult dog in the house, and the owners decide to take a small puppy, some problems are possible. The pet was the only pet, perhaps spoiled, so it can react aggressively when another creature, especially of the same species, appears. You need to very carefully introduce him to the puppy, gradually teach them to behave well with each other and be attentive to both animals.
Instructions
Step 1
If you finally made the decision to take a puppy into the house, then take only a three-month-old or younger. Small adult dogs, as a rule, are not attacked, and in relation to older puppies they can not only show aggression, but also act accordingly - rush, bite, fight.
Step 2
Keep the animals in different rooms for the first few days, do not introduce each other. After a couple of days, you can swap them so that they do not meet. For example, ask a family member to move the puppy to the dog's room while you walk with it. Let him ban this room, and when he returns, the dog will live in another. So they quickly get used to each other's smell. If you notice that the dog reacts sharply to someone else's smell - barks and grumbles, punish and scold him. Any manifestation of aggression must be suppressed by punishment. Some owners believe that an angry dog can be calmed down by speaking affectionate words and trying to pet it. But this way the animal may think that you approve of its aggressiveness.
Step 3
After a few days, introduce the puppy and dog to each other. Be sure to keep the adult on a leash, but do not pull it. If you see that she is behaving aggressively, punish her, order her to sit. Allow the puppy to sniff the dog, suppressing its displeasure. The first time such a "session" should last no more than ten minutes, then take the dogs to different rooms. Arrange such meetings for 10-15 minutes several times a day and only in your presence. It will take two to three weeks before an adult dog gets used to a puppy.
Step 4
Make it clear to the dogs that you put one of them more important than the other. For example, if they both growl at each other, punish the youngest first, even if the adult starts first. Feed the older dog first, walk the puppy first, pay a little more attention and affection, make sure she gets her bone or toy. Feed the dogs separately. They are accustomed to having hierarchical relationships in the pack, so if they clearly know their position in the family, problems will not arise. But don't let an adult dog start to behave like a leader. You are the owner of both dogs and must show your lead in front of them. Behave according to your superiority - be the first to enter and exit the doors, ignore the dog when it asks for food or pester you, forbid lying on the couch or chair.
Step 5
After a few weeks, both dogs will get used to each other and begin to behave calmly. If the aggression is no longer observed, you can leave them alone in the absence of the owner. Raise your puppy, but remember to spend more time with the older dog. Over time, you will be able to make friends with a dog and a puppy.
