Often novice muskrat guides ask themselves a difficult question: what is the design of the simplest and most convenient cage? The answer can be as follows: the animals do not require special luxury, but they still need some comfort.
It is better to take the following sizes of the cage: width - 70 cm; height - 40 cm; length - 150-170 cm. Frame from a corner 30x30 (40x40) or any other. The side walls are sheathed with roofing iron. From the end of the entire opening, a door is hung with a closed mesh opening measuring 40x20 cm. The weight of this block, without floor and ceiling, is only 6-7 kg. Old sheets of corrugated slate with a size of 116x70 cm are laid on the floor and ceiling.
When making a frame, the lower and upper corners are set with shelves upward, so that it is convenient to lay sheets of slate. If not, you can use flat slate or iron, but asbestos-cement sheets are the best material. They are durable, lightweight, cheap, not afraid of moisture and are not gnawed by muskrats.
An iron pool is being installed right behind the door to the floor of the cage. Its dimensions are 70x30x30 cm. For the convenience of the kids leaving the pool, a 15 cm wide metal strip is fixed obliquely. The water drain pipe is welded to the bottom, at the lowest point. At a distance of 50 cm from the door, a blind partition with a 10x10 cm hole is installed, behind it there is a maternity ward. The partition can be made of any material, even plywood. The muskrats will immediately make a new hole according to their own taste, and the old one will be covered with bedding.
