Alabai is an indigenous breed of Central Asian Shepherd Dogs. Alabaev has long been used for the guard and security service.

History of the breed

Alabai is one of the oldest dog breeds. It has been forming for over 4 thousand years. The breed was distributed from the South Urals to the Caspian Sea. Alabai traces its history to Tibetan herding dogs and war dogs of Mesopotamia.

Central Asian Shepherd Dogs were used to guard caravans and houses, livestock. The dogs were kept in difficult conditions, and they fought predators countless times. Thanks to this, modern Alabai have acquired a hardened character and incredible strength. On the territory of their original habitat, the Alabaevs are used mainly as guard dogs and to protect herds from the attack of wolves. Because of this, in Turkmenistan, for example, Central Asian shepherds are called "Turkmen wolfhounds". Along with the Akhal-Teke horses, they are considered a national treasure of Turkmenistan - the export of Alabai puppies from this country is prohibited.

Exterior of dogs

Alabai are distinguished by a massive and wide head, short neck and strong limbs. The color of the Central Asian Shepherd Dogs varies and can be white, black, red, fawn, brindle, etc.

Males of adult Alabai reach a height at the withers of 70 centimeters or more, females - 65 centimeters or more. Dogs can weigh up to 70-80 kilograms.

Weight of puppies

As a rule, Alabai puppies are acquired at the age of three months. Their weight at a given period of development may vary. Some three-month-old Central Asian Shepherd puppies weigh 20 kilograms or more (even 26 kilograms for puppies at this age is not the limit). It happens that a three-month-old puppy weighs less than 10 kilograms and looks thin outwardly. But later the Alabai quickly gains the weight characteristic of the breed.

In the case of the Central Asian Shepherd Dogs, one cannot judge the complexion of the dog at such an early age. Height and weight at three months is a poorly informative indicator. Each puppy develops in its own way. The main thing for the Alabaevs is a balanced physical activity and good feeding. A more informative indicator is the puppy's monthly weight gain.

Depending on the care, even puppies from the same litter can vary greatly in development. If at the age of three months the puppy looks large, then in the case of increased physical exertion by the age of one and a half the dog may look like a thin Great Dane. And vice versa - medium-sized puppies, with a balanced load and good nutrition, easily grow up to 75 centimeters at the withers and weigh 60-70 kilograms.
