One of the biggest challenges is toilet training. In this painstaking business, it is important to be patient. Especially if you are toilet training an adult cat or cat.
Instructions
Step 1
Tray selection.
Now pet stores are full of an abundance of cat trays: deep and shallow, with or without a lattice, in all possible sizes and colors. If you are already toilet training an adult animal, feel free to take a deep tray - there is no chance that it will not be able to get there. It is also advisable that the litter box is large, many cats like to delve into the litter thoroughly. There are trays with curved top edges to help you avoid spilling litter during a particularly careful cleaning of your cat. There are animals that dig up the filler especially intensively or are embarrassed to go to the toilet if someone is looking at them. For these cases, there are closed trays. They are also good for keeping odor out.
Step 2
The choice of filler.
Previously, cats went to the sand (which had to be harvested in the summer for the whole winter) or to the newspaper. It is not hygienic for the cat and unpleasant for you. A terrible smell spreads everywhere, forcing you to constantly change the contents of the tray. Pet stores offer a huge assortment of fillers, they are not very expensive. The cheapest, environmentally friendly and safe filler is wood. This filler is best suited for trays with mesh inserts. The wet filler crumbles and falls on the bottom of the tray, and only dry remains on top. But, despite its environmental friendliness, this type of filler does not mask odors very well. Clumping fillers do an excellent job with this task. You only need to scoop out the stool and lump after the animal has gone to the toilet. There are even perfumed fillers, however, veterinarians do not recommend using them.
Step 3
Choosing a place for the tray.
Do not scold the animal if it “misses” first. Sometimes, in order to train an adult cat to use the litter box, it is enough just to position it correctly. Observe the cat, if you are satisfied with the place that she chose, put the tray there, if not, then as soon as you notice that the animal sits down "in the toilet", gently take it and take it to the tray. Don't forget to give praise and treats if your cat has done everything right. Never poke your cat with your nose into a puddle - this will only provoke it to further attract your attention. Instead, it is recommended to soak a cloth or napkin in this urine, or better to put the filler in the tray, and then take the cat there and plant it, let it smell.
