Choosing a good Yorkie puppy is a very serious matter. This choice must be approached responsibly. The selection is based on some signs concerning the health and appearance of the puppy.
A Yorkshire Terrier puppy is picked up at the age of 2-3 months. By this age, the puppy must have all vaccinations and have a veterinary passport with their marks. If the puppy has a pedigree, then you should be given a puppy card, which contains all the data on the puppy.
Puppy behavior
Observe the puppy. He should be active and strong, cheerful and agile. Such a puppy has a shiny iridescent clean coat. The coat should be free of dandruff, peeling, dryness. If there are any, you shouldn't take such a puppy.
A healthy pet should walk on straight limbs with round, gathered paws. Movements are free and coordinated. Lame or stiff movements indicate progressive joint malformation.
Take your puppy if its coat is black with gold markings. Increased hairiness in a small puppy can be encouraged if it is completely silk. If the coat is wavy or curly, then it will not become straight in the future. Incomprehensible spots are not allowed, but a small white spot on the chest is possible, since it disappears during molting.
Puppy health
Examine the puppy carefully from all angles. The nose should be black, cold and damp. The mucous membrane of the gums should be pink, and if they are pale, then this indicates anemia. Each jaw of the puppy has 6 incisors and 2 canines. The bite should be scissor bite, in extreme cases - a pincer bite. Other types of bite are undesirable.
A 2–3 month old puppy, which in the future claims to win in shows, should have a closed fontanelle. Examine the crown. In older puppies, weighing up to 1.5 kg, the fontanel is open and measures 3 mm in diameter.
Unfortunately, such a puppy has no chance of winning at shows. If a puppy has a weak constitution and a large apple-shaped head, bulging eyes and an ungrown fontanelle, then he suffers from nanism. Such dogs die from dropsy.
The Yorkie's eyes should be dark, moist, looking straight ahead. Smudges under the eyes indicate eyelid defects. Suppuration indicates the presence of infection in the body. Dark pupils, clear iris of the eye - evidence of the absence of inflammation and injury.
The ears of Yorkie puppies rise by the age of 2 months, but there are exceptions if the puppy is from thoroughbred parents. Examine the puppy's ears. There should be no crusts or baldness along the edge of the ear, they should be covered with hair. The visible areas of the ear must be clean. If the baby shakes his head, scratches behind the ear and an unpleasant odor comes out of it, indicating that an inflammatory process has begun in the ear.
Your belly skin should be clean, healthy, and free of blemishes or rashes. The abdomen should not be swollen, as this may indicate impaired digestion or helminthic invasion.
