First of all, confirm your decision to have a dog of this particular breed. The German Shepherd is a large and active dog that requires serious exercise and long walks. If you do not have time or energy for daily activities with a dog, give up the temptation to have a shepherd dog.
Step 2
When you are confident in your choice, clearly define what the dog is for: for protection, for sports, for exhibitions, for walks, for breeding? Depending on the purpose of the dog, you can navigate in finding the right puppy for you. Why is that? The range of prices for dogs of such a popular breed is very large. An adult dog to guard a private house can be taken at a shelter, and you will have to fork out for a show-class puppy.
Step 3
Having stopped your choice on a dog for exhibitions, choose a kennel according to your taste and within your pocket. Puppies from young, not yet established kennels are usually cheaper. But the dogs obtained in them cannot always successfully compete with more eminent brethren. Do not choose a nursery only for beautiful advertisements on the site. Be sure to talk to breeders in person.

Find out more about the selected nursery. What pedigrees and titles do the producers have? Do they have the necessary certificates and passed standards for OKD and ZKS. Whether inbreeding (closely related crossing) was used in breeding. What is the account of the nursery among the breeders. All this information can be obtained on specialized forums.
Step 5
If there are currently no puppies for sale in the selected kennel, you can sign up for one of the following litters. If there are puppies, then you will be asked to choose one of them. Pay attention to the fact that the puppy is healthy and does not have obvious breed abnormalities (incomplete teeth, non-standard color, curled tail, cryptorchidism).
Step 6
Enter into a puppy sale and purchase agreement with the breeder. It is recommended to separately discuss the possibility of reimbursing a part of the amount if the dog subsequently detects such breeding defects as cryptorchidism, dysplasia, epilepsy. Together with the puppy, the breeder hands you the puppy's pedigree card (which you will later exchange for a pedigree in your club) and his veterinary passport.
