Goldfish (veil tails, telescopes, lion heads, comets, etc.) Pay attention to the shape of the abdomen: if it is round, then you are most likely in front of a female. But in some fish with an elongated body, such as comets, it is almost impossible to distinguish the sex in this way. Look at the front fins, the male has serrations, in addition, during the mating season, tubercles appear on the gill covers.

Viviparous fish (guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, etc.). Guppy males are brightly colored, have lush elongated tail and fins. Females, on the contrary, are nondescript. Swordsmen have a tail fin elongated in the form of one or two swords. All live-bearers can be distinguished by their gonopodia, an organ for the fertilization of females.

Determining the sex of scalars is difficult, although there are some differences - the male is brighter and has a slightly convex forehead, but this does not give 100% certainty. It is better to choose an immediately formed pair, scalars usually find a life partner for themselves at a young age.

Gourami is also difficult to distinguish. Look at the shape of the dorsal fin. In males, it is more pointed. After the fish reaches puberty, you can see how the male cares for the female.

Lyalius already at 1, 5-2 months acquire a bright color, which can be used to determine the sex of the fish. Males have a pointed fin on their back and red antennae. In the female, on the contrary, the fin is rounded, and the antennae are yellow. During courtship, the male becomes much brighter and chases the female, after which he builds a nest from air bubbles.

To distinguish catfish, you first need to determine which subspecies the fish in question belongs to. If this is difficult, then look at the dorsal fin. In some males, it is tall, radial, and in the female, rounded. Also pay attention to the pectoral fins, males of some subspecies have notches or a sharp fin. In addition, if you look at the fish from above, the female will stand out with a thickened abdomen.

Males are very beautiful aquarium fish, males are much more intensely colored, and fins are much longer than that of females. In addition, if you come across two males, then they will not live peacefully in the same aquarium, which is why they are also called fighting fish.

Barbs (Sumatran) have an elegant striped color. A bright red border runs along the dorsal and anal fins in males, while in females it is transparent and faded.
