Start by grabbing the hamster by the scruff of the neck and lifting it up. In this position, the animal will stretch out and spread its hind legs to the sides. It's much easier to see the floor this way. In females, the anal and vaginal openings are close. In males, on the contrary, the distance from the genitals to the anus is quite large. In addition, if the hamster is already one month old, then the testicles can already be distinguished.
Step 2
You can also determine the sex by the coat. Male long-haired Syrian hamsters have longer hair than females. The hamster gentleman can boast of a chic fur coat, while the ladies have long hair only in the "skirt" and the fur behind the ears. Another characteristic feature that distinguishes the male is that if you hold the hamster by the scruff of the neck, then the bottom hangs down quite strongly.
Step 3
If you have a Dzungarian hamster, gender is easier to determine. Place the animal on your palm, tummy up. Hold the head with your thumb. In the male, the distance between the anus and the genitals is large and covered with fur. And in the middle between them you will see a tubercle that looks like a small hernia or sore. In females, this distance is small, without fur. Two rows of papillae can be seen on the abdomen.
Step 4
In character, the male and female are not too different. Is that the female is a little more affectionate towards the owner. In addition, she is more clean as a woman. Lit less in his cage and more carefully cares for his own fur. But if you decide to have a couple of hamsters, then think - why? The opinion that a hamster alone will be bored is a myth. On the contrary, as they grow up, hamsters will fight for territory and food. The fight cannot be avoided. It doesn't matter if same-sex hamsters are in the same cage or not.
