If you decide to have chickens, you need to be prepared for the fact that the hassle will greatly increase. To make it easier to care for chicks, you need to think about the feeder in advance. You can buy it in a store or make it yourself with the help of available tools.
How to make a small chicken feeder?
If you have recently purchased chicks, you should make a very compact feeder for them. This requires a minimum set of tools. First, prepare a small plastic bucket and cut the edge with a pair of wire cutters. By the way, you need to make small cuts, and then enlarge them. Pour compound feed into the bucket. Now cover it with a plastic plate and flip it over gently. So we got a simple feeder for chicks, from which food is poured out as needed.
When the chicks grow up a little, they will need a slightly larger feeder. To make it, take a regular plastic bucket and punch holes in it. The number of holes should match the number of sections in the bowl. This refers to the sectional dog bowl, which will also come in handy at work. Place the bucket over the bowl so that there is a hole above each section. Then fix the resulting structure with nuts and screws. It remains only to fill the food inside and install a new feeder in the chicken coop.
DIY large feeder
Another trough option is ideal if you have a lot of chicks. Prepare a plastic bowl and food container to create it. A canister or a water tank can act as such a container. So, cut off the top of the bowl. The height should be such that the chicks can easily reach the feed. Cut off the bottom of the canister.
Then cut the drywall mount into three pieces. You will get "legs" -support, which should be attached to the container with bolts. Bend them slightly at the bottom to ensure maximum structural stability. This is the whole process of making a large chicken feeder.
How to make a broiler chicken feeder?
If you are planning to start broiler chicks, be aware that feeding will need to be given special attention. These poultry must have constant access to food. But there is not always time to add food to the chickens.
You will need two plastic buckets, a piece of plastic pipe, and two cooler containers. Make holes in the buckets first. Their size should be such that the bird cannot get inside. Then carefully cut out the template from the cardboard and attach it to the sides of the bucket. Circle it. Well, for cutting you need an electric jigsaw.
The pipe section will act as a restrictor for the feed flow. The length of the segment should not be less than 15 cm. At a distance of 3 cm from the edge, make three holes in it with a drill. Next, with a jigsaw, you will need to cut out the segments at an angle to the base on the longer side. It remains only to fill the containers with food and water, set the limiter, cover it all with a bucket and turn it over. The broiler chick feeder is ready.
