It is known that rats are very intelligent animals, which is probably why they are so popular as pets. When arranging housing for a new pet, one must take into account that rats are also very mobile animals, in addition, they need a small shelter, a nest, where they will be completely hidden from view.

Step 1
Get a spacious cage, its height should be at least eighty, or better than a hundred centimeters, width - at least forty centimeters, length - from sixty centimeters, the distance between the bars of the cage should be no more than one centimeter.
Step 2
Make 3-4 tiers, each with a height of at least 15-20 centimeters (in other words, such a height that your rat can freely stand on its hind legs), use plastic or a wire grate, a net for this, which must be covered with a piece of linoleum, otherwise the rat can injure its paws. Cover the cage floor with a piece of linoleum if it is wired. Connect the tiers with ramps and ladders.
Step 3
Install a fake bottom, a plastic sieve that is 2 to 3 centimeters higher than the actual day. Please note that the diameter of the holes should be no more than 3 millimeters, and the distance between them should be about 6 millimeters, otherwise the rats' paws may get stuck in them. Pour hardwood sawdust (aspen, for example) or clean (ink is poisonous!), Unflavored paper under the fake bottom.
Step 4
Make different climbing frames - ladders, ramps from roots, thick twigs, branches of oak, maple, beech, willow, hazel and fruit trees, paper tubes with a diameter of 6 to 8 cm, ropes from coconut fibers. Strengthen boards and observation platforms for the bars of the cage.
Step 5
Equip on the middle or upper (in a small cage - on the first) tier a cozy little house: houses for guinea pigs, wooden boxes for nests of large parrots or, for example, an inverted clay flower pot with a hole in the wall or a cardboard box of sufficient size, are perfect, as well the house can be assembled from planks or stones. Hang a hammock from a dense, moisture-permeable, fast-drying fabric to the cage.
Step 6
Take a piece of fabric 25-30 centimeters long, attach ribbons at the corners, take a second piece of fabric 5 centimeters shorter than the first and sew them together to make something like a sleeping bag. Attach a nipple drinker to the outside of the cage bars (a plate or water bath is not suitable for rats). Install metal or ceramic feeders on the first tier, it is even better to attach them to the rods of the cage, so it will be impossible to turn them over.
