It is not so important whether you are planning to seriously engage in breeding parrots, are looking for a pair for an existing parrot, or if you want your pet to surprise guests with conversations in the future. Sometimes the problem of choosing a parrot of a particular sex and age becomes quite serious. Of course, if you do not know some of the rules.
Instructions
Step 1
Young budgerigars have a rather short tail, but this trait disappears by two months, when the tail reaches its normal length. Usually, by the month of the month, parrots already know how to fly.
Step 2
Pay attention to the color of the back of the parrot. In young males, a wavy pattern is clearly distinguishable on the head and upper back. With age, the pattern becomes blurred and fuzzy. But the overall color of the plumage becomes brighter and more diverse.
Step 3
The first molt in parrots occurs in a month and a half. By this age, the parrot should have an even, smooth plumage. If the seller assures you that the feathers just “haven't grown yet”, think about it. Perhaps the bird is old or sick.
Step 4
The eyes of young parrots are completely black; with age, a white iris appears around the pupil.
Step 5
The older the budgie, the lighter the color of the beak. In chicks, the beak is almost black, gradually the blackness begins to disappear, and in adult birds the beak is completely light, without any black stripes.
Step 6
In the upper part of the beak, budgerigars have a ridge in which the nasal openings are located. It is called wax. It is the color of the wax that is the main sign in determining the sex of budgerigars.
Step 7
In young males, the wax is always monochromatic, bluish, lilac, pinkish, and in females, with the same color, a light ring is visible around the nostrils. With age, the ring disappears, and the color of the wax in adult parrots becomes bluish, grayish-white or brown. In sexually mature males, the wax is bright blue and shiny.
Step 8
In very young birds, it can be difficult to determine the sex with the help of wax wax: in chicks, it is equally light, almost white. In this case, try observing the behavior of the birds. Males are more active, like to show themselves, to knock. Females are usually calm, singing short, simple songs. Of course, during the observation, the birds should be in their usual environment.
