Moving can be one of the most stressful experiences your pet can have. Having a pet-friendly moving plan will give you a sense of peace and comfort for your pet.
Create a move plan and stick to it. If you have a plan, you will be able to look after your pet in the best way on the road.
Visit your veterinarian. Don't wait until the last minute! Once you've decided to move, call your veterinarian and make an appointment. Get advice on how to make the move the least traumatic for your pet. And do not forget to make copies of all vaccinations that have been given to your pet, all documents and certificates, which you will then need to show to the veterinarian in a new place.
Contact the airline and inquire about traveling with pets. Cats and small dogs often fly in small cages or carriers with their owners in the cockpit. Large animals may require special transportation. Don't forget to inquire about additional charges for transporting animals.
Prepare your pet for the move. Trim it, wash it, cut your nails. The pet will smell clean, its nails will be trimmed, and it will not be able to spoil the interior of the car and you will not have to let a dirty animal into a new house. Consider a short haircut for long-haired dogs. Also consider grooming your cat, as they shed heavily in stressful situations.
Pamper your pet during this difficult time. Let him sleep in your bed, walk him, play with him, and give him his favorite food and treats. This will lift his spirits for the day of the move. Pets are the last thing people think about when moving. Pets feel forgotten and unloved, which leads to more stress and bad habits.
Check your new home before admitting the animal. If you have nowhere to leave your pet, keep it on a leash or carrier first. Check your home for dangerous items such as fresh paint, sawdust, broken glass, or exposed wires. Only then can you let your pet explore the new home.
Arrange things familiar to your pet: toys, bowls, blankets.
Keep your pet safe. After moving to a new location, your pet will experience stress for a few more days. To avoid getting lost, attach a medallion with your address and contacts to his collar.
Play with your pet. Give him time to get used to, take care of him, play with him so that he perceives the new place as safe and friendly.
