Demodectic mange is a canine disease caused by an intradermal parasitic mite. Some breeds are more susceptible to disease, others less. In some, the course may be almost asymptomatic, localized, while others receive severe complications. In any case, this disease requires treatment by a qualified veterinarian and the active participation of the owner.
Instructions
Step 1
Reddened, flaky patches on the head or legs of your dog should make you think you are sick. To find out if it is demodicosis, a veterinarian will help. He must exclude other diseases and take a scraping for analysis. Similar symptoms can occur with allergies, fungal infections, eczema, flea dermatitis, sarcoptic mange. All these diseases are accompanied by itching. With uncomplicated demodicosis, itching is absent.
Step 2
Once the diagnosis is established, the doctor prescribes medication. Part of the therapy will be carried out immediately: injections of immunostimulating agents, ivermicin, vitamins. You will also have to take part in the treatment of the dog: adjust the diet, follow the doctor's orders.
Step 3
Home treatment includes the following items:
- Application of antiparasitic ointment to the affected area (once every seven days).
- Baths - for the treatment of concomitant infections. Be sure to dry your dog's coat well after washing.
- Vitamin E is prescribed to support the dog's body (as prescribed: twice a day, but not during feeding).
- Brewer's yeast with sulfur - to improve the condition of the skin and coat.
- Hepatoprotectors (Karsil, Ovesol) - to protect the dog's liver from the toxic effects of acaricidal drugs.
Step 4
To monitor the effectiveness of treatment, the veterinarian does a second scraping every two to four weeks. Treatment is considered successful if the number of living parasites is reduced. When the dog begins to grow hair on the affected areas, and ticks are not found in the scrapings, the therapy is continued for two weeks. An animal can be considered healthy if no relapse has occurred within six months.
Step 5
To prevent recurrence of the disease, as well as infection with ticks and fleas, use a special collar with acaricidal antiparasitic action.
