Urticaria, or Aglais urticae, is a diurnal butterfly in the Nymphalida family. This is one of the most common butterflies in Russia, so it can be said without exaggeration that everyone has seen it. The popular name for this species of butterflies is "chocolate maker".

Step 1
Hives are one of the most common butterflies in central Russia. They can be found everywhere: in city squares, parks, forests and fields. They got their name in honor of the nettle, because they appear wherever this plant can be found. They appear in early spring and remain until late summer. Overwintering urticaria can sometimes be found in well-heated rooms.
Step 2
The wings of urticaria are brick-brown in color with yellowish gaps. Relatively large black spots are located against a bright background, the bases of the wings are also black. The root parts of the wings are dark brown. On the outer edges of the wings, there are teeth and crescent-shaped projections decorated with blue spots. The wingspan of urticaria moths is 40-50 mm. Among the people, these butterflies are sometimes called chocolates. Curiously, hives are able to distinguish between red.

Males of urticaria are practically indistinguishable from females. In addition, it is practically impossible for ordinary people to distinguish by eye the relatives of urticaria - polychrome and burdock.
Step 4
Urticaria caterpillars can usually be found on the leaves of the nettle. They have a dark, almost black color with yellow longitudinal lines, and their bodies are studded with peculiar spines. During the summer, two or three generations of new butterflies are hatched. During this period, the caterpillars molt several times and each time increase in size.
Step 5
The pupation of urticaria occurs in an amazing way. The caterpillar hangs upside down, using a specific glue to secure it to the leaf. Soon the shell falls off and an angular pupa is born. She remains in this position for two to three weeks. When the pupa finally bursts, hives develop from it with very short wings that grow in a matter of minutes.
