Tail docking refers to an aesthetic operation designed to improve the dog's conformation. Despite the seeming simplicity of this procedure, it must be remembered that any surgical intervention can lead to various kinds of complications. Therefore, it is recommended to entrust this operation to professional veterinarians.
Instructions
Step 1
Tail docking is usually done at the age of 1-7 days. During this period, the tail vertebrae of babies have cartilage density and, thanks to this, wound healing occurs very quickly. In addition, it is generally accepted that the sensitivity of puppies at this time is still minimal and it is almost impossible to hurt them.
If, for one reason or another, it was not possible to make the stopping at this age, you can carry out this procedure at an older age. In this case, the stopping operation is performed under general anesthesia and suturing.
Step 2
It should be remembered that tail docking must be carried out strictly between the vertebrae. An improperly docked tail will disturb the dog. In addition, an ineptly cut tail can just look ugly.
Step 3
Docking the tail with an elastic band. This method of docking is considered the least traumatic, It is based on the impaired circulation of the puppy's tail. Take a tight elastic band. Pull the skin towards the root of the tail as much as possible. Wrap the elastic around the desired caudal vertebra. Within 2-3 days, the tip of the tail, without receiving blood flow, will dry out and die off.
Step 4
Cupping with an emasculator. Disinfect the instrument thoroughly. Ask a helper to fix the puppy. Pull the skin on the tail towards the root. Clamp the intended place firmly and cut off the tip of the tail using special scissors - an emasculator. Keep the cut point clamped for 1 to 2 minutes. Powder the wound with antiseptic powder. If blood continues to flow, apply cotton wool soaked in hydrogen peroxide to the wound.
