No living creature is immune from disease. Hamsters are no exception. In order to help your pet if necessary, you must at least know what diseases these animals are susceptible to.
Instructions
Step 1
If something gets stuck behind the cheek of the hamster, or if the animal has injured this area by trying to shove a sharp object, inflammation of the cheek pouches may occur. Do not try to free the hamster from it yourself and do not expect everything to pass and dissolve. The inflammation will only intensify, and the consequences can be the most dire. Therefore, at the first suspicion of inflammation, contact your veterinarian.
Step 2
A wet lower abdomen in an animal is an alarming symptom. But maybe it's just diarrhea. Eliminate succulent foods from your diet. Give stale bread, some boiled rice, oatmeal. Brew chamomile. Pour the broth into the animal's mouth little by little with a pipette.
Step 3
"Wet tail" is no longer a simple diarrhea that can be easily cured. In this disease, watery diarrhea is accompanied by loss of appetite, dehydration, rectal bleeding. The animal becomes irritable. The disease is highly contagious. Literally in the first 1-3 days, up to 90% of sick animals die. The cause of death is dehydration. Even with the intensive treatment started on time, 50% of the animals still die. At the first sign of illness, see your veterinarian. Correct and on time started treatment will help the hamster to survive. Usually the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. Some of them have contraindications, so do not try to cure the animal yourself.
Step 4
Lymphocytic choriomeningitis is quite common in young hamsters. Symptoms of the disease are subtle, but it can be transmitted to humans. A balanced diet helps to avoid illness.
Step 5
Hamsters are very susceptible to changing weather conditions. Sneezing, festering eyes, noisy breathing are signs of a cold. Place your hamster cage close to a heat source. The air temperature should be 23-25 degrees. Brew chamomile. Soak a piece of bread in the broth and try to feed it to your hamster. This can help at first. However, if there is no improvement or wheezing has joined the primary signs of the disease, then this already looks like pneumonia. Seek help from your veterinarian and the sooner the better.
Step 6
If your pet is inactive, and you notice that he is getting better, this is an alarming sign. Perhaps he becomes obese, and this can lead to blockage of blood vessels and even to cardiac arrest. Buy a treadmill, an effective obesity prevention method. In the evening, when the animal is most active, let it run out of the cage. Don't overfeed your pet. An adult hamster eats about 2 tablespoons of food per day. Stick to this norm.
