Usually, a guinea pig is kept as a pet in homes where children grow up. This is a fairly calm animal that does not harm its owners. Veterinarians recommend buying gilts at the age of four to six weeks - they have already received the necessary breast milk and can live on their own. If you are not ready to breed pets, take one animal or a same-sex couple. It is important to distinguish the sex of the guinea pig in a timely manner.
Instructions
Step 1
It is possible to distinguish an adult male guinea pig from a female by some external signs. Usually male animals are larger, have a high withers and strong bones. The presence of a number of nipples is not an indicator, since they are present in both “men” and “women”. It is more difficult to determine the sex of cubs (and they are primarily bought for taming).
Step 2
Turn the small animal (three weeks of age and older) over with its paws upwards, holding it securely behind its back. Then examine his Y-shaped genital slit and anus. In females, the distance between them is noticeably greater than in males. Compare different individuals with each other until among them there are animals with obvious differences.
Step 3
Pull the tail of the guinea pig down and press with the pad of your finger (very lightly at first, then a little harder) into the place near the anus. In male babies, a small bulge (reproductive organ) is felt, which protrudes as a point at the top of the Y-shaped slit.
Step 4
Accordingly, if you see a vaginal opening, then in front of you is a "girl". In appearance, this organ also resembles the letter Y, directed "leg" to the tail. The vagina of the guinea pig is at a distance of about 2 mm from the anus. You will not find bulging points at its top.
Step 5
Finally, you can gently pull the skin of the guinea pig's external genitalia towards the belly. You will see most of the mucous membrane of the female, or a small area of it and the small penis of the male - this will finally confirm the sex of your future pet (pet).
