Causes of the appearance of bumps on the neck of a dog
Of course, bumps and subcutaneous tumors on the dog's neck are not always oncology, one of the most common reasons for their appearance are purulent abscesses caused by foreign bodies or bacterial infection that have fallen under the skin. The infection can get if the dog scratched the skin or got injured, including when sorting out relations with relatives.
In smooth-haired dogs, growths, warts and papillomas often appear on the neck. As in humans, a viral infection can be the cause of their appearance. Usually they do not interfere with the dog in any way, unless they are rubbed with a collar. A bump on the neck can be the result of an insect bite, such as a wasp, gadfly or horsefly. In this case, it can be very large and irritate the animal, which will try to scratch it with its paws.
In any case, after the appearance of a lump, especially if there is no suppuration, you need to wait a couple of days. Most often, after this time, the bumps simply dissolve, but if this has not happened, and even more so if the bump is clearly increasing in size, the dog should be shown to the veterinarian.
How to cure a lump on a dog's neck
Self-treatment can only be done if you are sure that the dog is simply festering. Remove pus, rinse the wound with chlorhexidine solution and spread with anti-inflammatory ointment, for example, Levomekol. On an open wound, you can also apply sterile wipes moistened with a solution of chymotrypsin mixed 1: 1 with a 0.25% solution of prikain. The napkin should be fixed on the neck of the animal and left for several hours. Injuries and scratches should also be treated immediately with some kind of disinfectant so that suppuration does not start.
If an abscess has begun, it is better to have the dog operated in a clinic, where they can remove the pus, rinse and disinfect the wound well, put in drainage and prevent the infection from spreading further. All bumps found in a dog must be shown to the veterinarian so that he can establish the cause of their formation, perform the necessary tests, and exclude the possibility of degeneration into a malignant tumor. If the lump on the animal's neck has been around for a long time, it is better to remove it immediately in order to examine the material obtained for a biopsy and take action in case of danger in time. It is also better to remove papillomas located on the neck, even if they do not cause any visible disturbance to the animal.
