Wolves howl during rest, during hunting, during any danger. If the grays hunt, then it is the howl that helps them understand where the animal they are chasing is. Moreover, when people hunt the wolves themselves, the animals also howl warn each other about danger. And sometimes they leave the hunters. True, this does not happen very often.
