Dwarf smooth-haired, long-haired or wire-haired dachshunds are adorable dogs characterized by friendliness, independence and quick wits. In order for your future pet to bring you only joy, pay special attention to choosing a puppy. Don't buy the first animal you come across - a thoroughbred dachshund is worthy of a close inspection.
Instructions
Step 1
If you are interested in a dog with a pedigree, contact only trusted breeders. The correct address can be given to you at the kennel club. Please note that pre-registration can be arranged for especially promising puppies from titled parents.
Step 2
Puppies are ready to move from their native nest no earlier than two months after birth. By this age, they stop feeding on mother's milk and get used to solid foods. In addition, two-month-old puppies undergo compulsory deworming and receive the first vaccination. Grown up puppies 3-5 months old are also a good option, especially for novice dog breeders.
Step 3
When choosing a puppy, take your time. Examine the entire litter, observe the animals. You need a cheerful, active and curious dog. His cheerful and lively disposition is an indicator of good health and temperament. Do not take a timid puppy - you will most likely have problems with training.
Step 4
Take the puppy in your arms. A healthy dog should be well-fed, but not overfed. Dachshunds are distinguished by a smooth body without "barrel" ribs. At the age of two months, it is already possible to assess the proportions of the animal - they must correspond to breed standards. Too crooked, thin paws, a disproportionate head or high set ears are a clear defect of the breed. The dwarf dachshund should have a straight back without hump or sagging and a smooth tail without kinks.
Step 5
Assess the color of the puppy. The black and tan, brown or red skin should not have white spots or even individual light hairs. The color of the dachshund should be uniform, the coat should be smooth and shiny. Turn the baby over, look at the abdomen, throat and inside of the paws. A healthy puppy has no scuffs, rashes, scratches.
Step 6
Examine the face of the future pet. Discharge from the eyes, nose, or mouth can be a signal of health problems. Lift the tail - there should be no traces of diarrhea near the anus. Look in your ears, check the correct bite.
Step 7
Having made your choice, do not forget to issue a puppy pet card with the breeder. Check the dates of vaccinations, discuss the baby's diet. A conscientious breeder will share with you all the intricacies of raising a thoroughbred puppy.
