Ferrets are very clean animals and it is necessary to train them to the litter box from a very early age. But don't ask too much of your pet. If the ferret goes to the litter box 80% of the time, this is already a good result.
Instructions
Step 1
Once you bring your ferret into your home, keep it in a cage for the first few days. Immediately place the tray in it that you plan to use in the future, when the animal is free to move around the apartment.
Step 2
Since ferrets always relieve themselves a few minutes after sleep, you need to train them to use the litter box as follows. Wake your pet up and pick it up. As soon as he starts to show anxiety, put him in the tray and make sure that he does not run away to another place. After using the toilet for the first time, praise your ferret, treat it with a favorite treat, and give it a walk outside the cage. But every half hour, take your pet back and put it on the tray.
Step 3
If your ferret shits indoors, treat the area with a disinfectant that removes odors. Scold the ferret and lock it in a cage for a while. During the next walk around the apartment, carefully monitor the pet and do not allow the situation to recur.
Step 4
Remember that ferrets love cleanliness and will never go to a dirty litter box. Therefore, wash it several times a day, and if using filler, clean it as it gets dirty. As soon as your pet begins to regularly spend its needs in the tray, start accustoming him to a free life in the house.
Step 5
First, give the pet one of the rooms at the disposal of the pet, and do not let it into the rest at this stage. Place the litter box in one corner of the room and place toilet paper dipped in animal urine into it. If the ferret relieves itself in another place, do not scold him, because the animal has not yet got used to the new room. Wipe the stained area with an odor-freeing compound and place a cloth on the area that serves as a bedding for the animal. When the ferret smells it, it will not defecate in the same place.
Step 6
As soon as you notice that the ferret has adopted a characteristic posture and is going to shit in the wrong place, immediately take it to the tray. If you did not have time, it makes no sense to scold the animal. The punishment will be effective only if the pet is caught by surprise. At first, try to constantly look after the ferret, this will speed up the learning process.
Step 7
As soon as the animal settles in a new place and begins to walk in a litter box in a disciplined manner, open up a new space for him and thus gradually accustom him to a free life in the house. If there are a lot of rooms, then several trays will have to be installed, since the ferret's digestion process is very fast and the animal will not run to the tray if it is too far away.
