Where do fleas come from?
Fleas can appear in a pet even if the best care is provided to him and he rarely walks next to stray animals. For example, a dog can "catch" fleas in the place where a flea cat or dog walked shortly before it. The fact is that such bloodsuckers are able to survive for a long time on the leaves of trees, among fallen leaves and in the grass. And in pursuit of a food source, that is, an animal, they can travel quite large distances. The length of one jump of a flea can reach 350 mm, and in height they jump as much as 250 mm, that is, it costs them nothing to catch up and climb even on a large dog. In addition, flea larvae can enter the house where the animal lives, on the soles of shoes or the owner's clothes. And if an adult animal can be rid of fleas by treating its wool with special veterinary preparations, which include aggressive chemicals, then in the case of insect infestation of a two-month-old puppy, such measures should not be taken.
How to get rid of fleas in a puppy
At an early age, any animal tolerates the presence of fleas in its coat very hard, and dogs are no exception. At the age of two months, the puppy is not yet able to independently cope with blood-sucking insects, even to a small extent. Moreover, he may simply not understand what gives him such anxiety, and mislead his master with plaintive whine, loss of appetite. Often, the symptoms of flea infestation in puppies are similar to the initial stage of some kind of disease, and the owners often do not even suspect that the pet's malaise is caused by blood-sucking insects.
If fleas are found in the fur of a two-month-old puppy, you must immediately take measures to destroy them. You can use folk remedies if the number of insect individuals is not yet large, for example, with cherem water. With a large accumulation of fleas in the puppy's coat, it is necessary to take more serious measures. The easiest option is to use a special flea shampoo that you can buy at a veterinary clinic or specialty store. It is necessary to use the product exactly according to the attached instructions, and after using it, the puppy's coat should be thoroughly rinsed with running water and dried immediately. This treatment will need to be repeated at least 3 times.
It is not recommended to use flea drops or collars to get rid of insects in two-month-old puppies, as they may lick the product from their body or remove and gnaw the collar, which can lead to serious poisoning.
How to prevent fleas in your puppy
But it is best not to remove fleas from the puppy, but to prevent their appearance. Preventive measures are much easier to carry out, because it is enough just to regularly inspect his fur, wash his bedding in hot water with the addition of simple laundry or baby soap and iron it after washing with a hot iron. In addition, it is necessary to treat the room where the pet lives with disinfectants.
