Chinchilla is an animal with thick silky fur of various colors. The small size, pleasant to the touch fur and ease of maintenance allows such an animal to live at home. When purchasing an animal, it is extremely important to be able to determine its age, so as not to buy an old or too small, helpless chinchilla.

Step 1
Determine the weight of the animal. Although the chinchilla cub eats food from 5 days, until 70 days of age, it still needs to feed on breast milk. For the full growth and development of a baby, every week of his life with his mother is important. Chinchillas become independent and capable of a separate life at the age of 3-4 months, at which time their weight is approximately 270-320 grams. If the weight of the animal is less, it is too early to separate it from its mother.
Step 2
Pay special attention to the selection of animals for breeding. Select large, strong and active 6-7 month old animals. At this age, the chinchilla weighs at least 400 g and has a thick hairline. Keep in mind that small chinchillas gain weight very quickly but stop growing after 24 months, when they reach 600 grams. If the animal weighs more than a pound, and the seller assures you that he is still a cub - do not believe it!
Step 3
Observe the behavior of chinchillas - old animals lose their activity, look more lethargic and apathetic. Young people, on the contrary, frolic and play merrily. Pay attention to the heels of the animal - with age, the skin on them becomes noticeably coarser. If you see calluses on your heels, you have a chinchilla grandmother in front of you. The eyes of old animals become dull and lose their luster. The quality of the fur also changes with age - the fluffy coat thinns, its color fades and becomes lighter.
