Frogs are creatures that are found in almost every country in the world. They are amphibians, able to live both in water and on land. The ancient Egyptians believed that frogs have the ability to resurrect, they were a symbol of eternal life. The Japanese believe that these unusual creatures attract good luck, success, and financial wealth. Therefore, it is recommended to keep figurines in the form of toads in houses.
Frogs begin their life in the water. First, tadpoles hatch from the eggs. They then go through up to 30 developmental stages before transforming into an adult.
Frogs are classified as amphibians for the reason that these creatures are able to breathe with both lungs and gills. When adult tailless animals are in the aquatic environment, they breathe with the help of the whole body, oxygen enters through the skin. While still tadpoles, the process of breathing is carried out by heat. While on land, frogs breathe in through their mouths, filling their lungs with air.
The heart of these animals works in an amazing way. When frogs are underwater, they have 2 parts of the heart. In creatures that have got out on land, the left atrium becomes active, due to which unmixed blood begins to flow through the body. Pure arterial blood flows to the frog's brain only on land.
The diet of tailless animals can be very varied. Depends on the species, on the habitat. Typically, frogs eat small insects such as mosquitoes, flies, bees and wasps. However, there are also such representatives who willingly feast on fish fry. An interesting fact: the frog is quite calm about the feeling of hunger. She is able to live without food for 7-10 days.
The stomach of any frog is noticeably smaller than its eyes. In the mouth of these creatures, teeth are present, which are located only on the upper jaw. They are not intended for chewing food. The frogs' teeth are a barrier so that the caught insect does not break free. Only toads, which also belong to the order of frogs, have no teeth.
The eyes play a role in the process of swallowing food. If you pay attention, you will notice that the frog necessarily blinks as soon as something edible gets into its mouth. The fact is that during blinking, the eyeballs drop and help push food into the stomach.
There are some more interesting facts about the organs of vision of these tailless animals:
- the frog's eyes are designed so that the creature can simultaneously look straight ahead, down, and also control the situation around;
- these animals do not feel the need for constant blinking;
- even during sleep, the frog does not close its eyes for a long time.
Among the representatives of tailless creatures there are those that do not exceed 1.5 centimeters in size. The smallest frogs in the world are amphibians living in Cuba. And the goliath is considered the most gigantic frog. Her body length reaches 90 centimeters. The weight can be 2-3 kilograms. Goliath frogs can jump to a height of 3 meters, they have very powerful hind legs.
The surface of the body of these amphibians is usually covered with a special mucus. It has a disinfecting effect, because in the past, our ancestors threw frogs into jars with milk so that the product would not deteriorate. Toads live in South America, in which the mucus on the body has hallucinogenic properties. There are also frogs in nature, whose glossy, sticky coating on their bodies is deadly to animals and humans. Among the most poisonous frogs are the cocoi that live in the jungle, and the aga toad, which can weigh up to 2 kilograms.
