Male or female? This question is asked by all people who are going to buy a budgerigar. In order to determine reliably, you need to know the age of the bird.
Instructions
Step 1
The sex of birds is determined primarily by the cornea, which changes color depending on the age of the bird. That is why it is important to understand before buying: how many months is your future pet.
Step 2
Up to three months, all parrots have a dimmer and more discreet plumage than adults. It is also worth paying attention to the claws and the tail - in young animals they will be small and short. At the age of one and a half months, parrots may have a black smear on their beak, which disappears as they grow older.
Step 3
Up to three months, the color of the cornea in female parrots is pale blue, often with a white edging around the nostrils. The beeswax of males at this age can range from pale purple to deep purple.
Step 4
After three months, the color of the wax changes. In females, it becomes white-gray or brown, and in males, it acquires a bright blue color.
Step 5
The exception is white budgerigars, since the wax in males and females has the same color. In order to accurately determine the sex of such a parrot, you need to contact the bird breeder or veterinarian.
Step 6
In order to be sure of the correct sex determination, purchase a bird in specialized stores, where sellers will help you determine the age of the parrot, and will also be able to accurately answer the question: is it a boy or a girl.
