Step 1
If you need a parrot for fun, go for a juvenile. The best age for normal adaptation to a new home will be a 5-6 week old chick. To get the bird used to you faster, spend a lot of time with it. At this age, in size, the cockatiel parrot is similar to an adult, but the color is much paler. If you cannot communicate with him often, pick up a male and a female - this way your pet will not get bored alone.
Step 2
Watch the cockatiel. If a parrot sits with closed eyes, ruffled and on two legs, it is sick. A healthy bird is very mobile, its eyes are shiny, completely open and have a round shape. Examine the ears by gently lifting the small feathers - the outer holes should not show signs of inflammation.
Step 3
Feel your parrot's chest muscles. In a well-fed and well-fed cockatiel, the chest frame is not palpable. If the bird was poorly fed, then the muscles of the sternum are atrophied, their sharp contour appears through the plumage. Do not choose such a parrot - an inadequate diet has affected health and will lead to the development of diseases.
Step 4
Look at the general condition of the feather cover: it should be uniform and without signs of feather tufts falling out. If the fit is loose and protruding feathers are visible, the parrot is infected with parasites. Spread out each wing in turn and make sure that all the flight and steering feathers are present. Examine the anus: the coating should not be stained with droppings, and if you blow on it, then skin without redness will appear.
Step 5
In parrots of this species, the sex is easily distinguished by the color of the plumage. The main difference is the brightness of the male's feathers and the dull coloring of the females. The male can be “dressed up” in dark olive feathers, with a yellow tufted head and red spots on the cheeks. And the female has a gray color with a brownish tint at the bottom of the body and pale brown spots on the cheeks. However, the male cockatiel acquires the final bright color by 9-12 months.
