- It is advisable to purchase a young parrot. First, he easily adapts to a new environment for him. Secondly, it will be more fun and active. It is much easier and faster to train a young parrot, but an "aged" bird may not succumb to all your attempts to teach her to talk at all. To be sure you are buying a young bird, look out for the parrot's eyes. In young parrots, the eyes are completely black, and in adult birds, the pupil is surrounded by a white ring. A young bird, which is not yet two months old, will have a much shorter tail than an adult. A clear wavy pattern appears on the head and back of a young parrot, while in an adult bird it differs very little. The older the parrot, the brighter its plumage is colored, and the lighter its beak.
