If you have acquired a four-legged pet in the form of a dog, then you are faced with a rather responsible task - proper care for him. If you do not have any difficulties with food, walking and other matters, then with the correct haircut of the claws, most likely, there will be a lot of questions.
To trim your dog's nails you will need:
- special scissors (can be purchased at any pet store, called a nail clipper device);
- powder (it will be needed in case of damage to blood vessels and will help to quickly stop bleeding);
- a special nail file.
Before you start cutting your pet's claws, you need to prepare a place for the procedure, walk the dog. It is worth remembering that if this is the first haircut for a dog, then it must be taken seriously, because it depends on the first haircut whether the pet will be afraid of this procedure in the future. So, examine the dog's claws. If they are light in color, then you are in luck, because it is in such claws that the pulp is clearly visible (part of the claw with nerve endings and blood vessels), it has a pinkish tint.
Take the scissors in your right hand, the pet's paw in the left and carefully cut a part of the dog's claw at a slight angle. File the cut immediately. Thus, cut and process all the claws of the pet, being careful not to touch the pulp. If the claw has a dark color, then get ready that the haircut will take a lot of time (but this is only in the first couple of haircuts, since in the future you will adapt and debug the procedure). Take the dog's paw in your left hand, and the scissors in your right, and begin to carefully cut off the claw a little bit and carefully examine the cut, peer to see if the capillaries are visible.
If during the procedure you touch the pulp and the dog bleeds, then in no case panic. Try to calm him down, pet him and give him a treat. To stop the bleeding, it is often enough to dip the claw into a container of powder. If this procedure does not help, then replace the powder with potassium permanganate.
How often to cut a dog's nails
If you often walk with your pet on asphalt sidewalks, then clipping the claws is almost unnecessary, since the claws grind off themselves. In all other cases, be sure to inspect the pet's claws once a week or two and cut them off by a couple of millimeters.
