Not every owner has the opportunity to call the veterinarian at home 2-3 times a day or take the animal to the clinic. How to give an injection to an animal yourself?

Step 1
Find the right syringe. For intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, syringes with a volume of 1, 2, 5 or 10 ml can be used. The choice of syringe depends on the amount of drug injected and the size of the animal.
Step 2
As a rule, injections to animals are performed without disinfecting the skin, but if desired, you can disinfect the injection site with alcohol by moistening it with a napkin or cotton wool.
Step 3
Collect the required amount of the drug and fix the animal. Remove the protective cap of the needle and set it aside or pinch it in the fold of the palm of your other hand. Turn the syringe upside down and squeeze out a drop of medication to remove air.
Step 4
Subcutaneous injection.
As a rule, this injection is done in the area of the withers. This is because the skin along the animal's spine contains the least number of nerve endings.
Gently pull the skin fold 1-2 cm. Take the syringe so that the needle rests on the index finger. Moving your hand parallel to the surface of the animal's body, insert the needle under the skin to a depth of 1.5 cm. Gently push the syringe plunger and inject the solution. Remove the needle and put on the protective cap. Massage the injection site a little.
Step 5
Intramuscular injection
Usually these injections are made in the thigh of the animal's left or right leg. In order for the injection to pass as painlessly as possible, the muscles of the paw must be relaxed. The cat or small dog can be kept suspended by slightly pulling its hind limb. It is recommended to place a large dog on the floor and slightly raise its paw.
Secure the animal's leg securely. Take the prepared syringe with the medicine and, moving your hand perpendicular to the body of the animal, insert the needle 1-2 cm. Gently press the plunger, inject the medicine, remove the needle and massage the injection site.
Step 6
Intravenous injection
Intravenous injections are given only by a veterinarian. An improperly administered intravenous injection can lead to death of the animal. Exceptions are cases when the injection is done into a previously installed catheter.
