The pressure in the dog should be measured if it has such diseases as heart and kidney failure, epilepsy, hormonal disorders. This can be done at home using a blood pressure monitor.
It is necessary
- - veterinary or conventional tonometer;
- - stethoscope.
Instructions
Step 1
Ask a family member to hold the collar. Place the cuff of the veterinary tonometer on either paw or tail of the animal (at its base). The device is very easy to use, it measures pressure and provides information automatically. Pressure up to 150 to 90 mm Hg is normal for dogs. In small breeds, the "upper" pressure can reach 160-170 mm Hg. Art
Step 2
Measure your dog's blood pressure with a regular blood pressure monitor if you don't have a veterinarian. It is easier to do this if the tonometer has a child's cuff. In addition, a stethoscope is required to measure blood pressure.
Step 3
Lay the dog on its side. The animal must be at rest. Place the cuff of the tonometer on the dog's front or hind paw. Use a bulb to pump air into the cuff. Your assistant can do this too.
Step 4
Release the air from the cuff slowly. Monitor the readings of the manometer of the device, while listening to the pulse on the artery with a stethoscope. The value of the "upper" pressure on the manometer will correspond to the beginning of the appearance of the pulse, the value of the "lower" pressure will be shown by the device at the moment when the pulse in the stethoscope stops listening.
Step 5
Use the palpation method of measuring pressure without a stethoscope, or if the pulse is difficult to listen to. The dog must also be in a resting and lying position. Place the cuff of the tonometer on her hind leg. Place your fingers on the dog's femoral artery.
Step 6
Have your helper pump air into the cuff and then release it slowly. Observe the readings of the device and at the same time feel the pulse in the dog's femoral artery with your fingers. The value of the "upper" pressure on the manometer will correspond to the beginning of the appearance of the pulse, the value of the "lower" pressure will be shown by the device at the moment when you stop feeling the pulse on the dog's artery with your fingers.
Step 7
Keep in mind that pressure fluctuates when measured with a conventional tonometer in dogs. In the femoral artery, its maximum value can be from 165 to 188 mm Hg, the minimum - from 29 to 34 mm. In the brachial artery, the maximum pressure will be from 130 to 145 mm, the minimum - from 29 to 37 mm Hg.
