If the house does not have a kitchen scale, it can be difficult to accurately determine the amount of dry food needed for a cat, dog or ferret - after all, standards are usually indicated in grams. In such cases, one has to deal with calculations, translating measures of weight into measures of volume.
It is necessary
- - a small measuring container (spoon, stack, glass);
- - jar or disposable plastic cup;
- - marker;
- - Bowl.
Instructions
Step 1
Read the information on the food bag carefully. Sometimes the package indicates not only the weight, but also the volume of the recommended daily portion. For example, 40 grams or ½ cup (i.e. 125 milliliters).
Step 2
Many feed manufacturers produce special measuring cups that allow you to accurately measure the required amount of pellets. As a rule, such measurements are attached to large packages of food (10-25 kg), in addition, they can be obtained free of charge at major pet stores and veterinary pharmacies. Just ask your vendor if they have measuring cups available for the brand of food you are using.
Step 3
Many pet stores sell pet food by weight. Ask the seller to accurately measure the daily portion and pack it in a separate bag. At home, pour the pellets into a small jar and mark with a marker at the desired height - this will allow you to measure out exactly the amount of feed you need in the future. You can use a disposable plastic cup for these purposes and cut it to the height of the mark.
Step 4
You can also “calculate” your daily feed intake based on the total amount of feed in the bag. For example, if you buy food in a package of 400 grams, and the animal needs to be given 50 grams of food per day, you can either divide the contents of the package into 8 portions and measure the volume of one of them. The second option is to take a small measuring container (depending on the size of the granules and the weight of the daily portion, it can be a teaspoon or tablespoon, a stack, a coffee cup, a glass) and, scooping food from the bag, gradually pour it into a bowl, counting how many units”you got it. This will allow you to calculate how many grams of feed will fit in a given container.
Step 5
If you transfer an animal from one feed to another, the measurements will have to be repeated, since the ratio of the weight of the feed to its volume depends on many parameters, including the size of the pellets and their shape, the density of the feed, etc. For example, a standard 250 ml glass holds about 75 grams of food for large breed dogs, about 100 for small dogs, and about 120 for kittens.
