Males most often have a bright color, high crest and long legs. Females, on the other hand, cannot boast of an attractive appearance. If you have regular broilers or layers, then you can distinguish a rooster by these characteristics. In purebred chickens, everything is somewhat more complicated, because the "ladies" have exactly the same color as the males. But in any case, females are smaller than their other half (rooster). Therefore, if they are all equally beautiful and colorful, be guided by the size and length of the legs.

If there are no external differences at all, then all that remains is to observe. Watch out for who crows in the morning - only roosters can do this. You can also figure out chickens that are laying. And while feeding, look - the head of the chicken coop is always the first to eat, the females stand aside for some time until he invites them to the feeding trough with a peculiar sound.

You can notice that when collecting eggs, the rooster can behave aggressively, although the chickens at this moment are quite calm and do not react in any way to the person who is trying to destroy their nest. Distinguishing day-old chicks is almost impossible. It is better to purchase them at those poultry farms where they are divided among themselves. Chickens are slightly more expensive than males, so if you are taking birds for meat, then choose males. You can try to figure out who is who by putting the chicken on the palm with its back facing down. Females lie quietly and do not try to rise, and males show resistance. But no matter how you try to distinguish them, there is still a fraction of the probability that you are mistaken.
