Competitions among pigeons for flight speed or accuracy of mail delivery are held quite regularly. In order to send your pet there, just having a strong and fast bird is not enough. It is necessary to teach her to navigate. You need to start preparing a pigeon for independent flights early enough.

Step 1
Introduce the dove to the look of the dovecote. He must know her not only from the inside, but also from the outside. As soon as your pet learns to peck on its own, start releasing it onto the roof through the pasture. Do this before feeding. He cannot fly away yet, and pigeons are generally not very inclined to change their place of residence. The walk can be finished as soon as the bird is thoroughly hungry. Teach the chick to enter the dovecote on its own. The best way is to lure him with food. You can also use a thin twig. But they need to act very carefully, in no case should they hit the pigeon. A twig can only lightly guide its movement.
Step 2
When the pigeon gets a little stronger, teach him to fly over the dovecote. The chick is already accustomed to the fact that food is waiting for him at home. At first, release the bird only in your presence and do not let it sit down. There is a military-ligamentous training method, according to which the pigeons are first kept locked up, and then they begin to release for a short time in a "non-stop flight" over a short distance. This is sometimes done with chicks raised in the same dovecote. But this is especially important if there are recently acquired adult pigeons in the flock that can fly away to their old home. If the purchased adult pigeon has already got himself a female in a new dovecote, he will not go anywhere. The first trips can be very short. Release the pigeon for a few minutes, then bait with food. Every day, increase the duration of the "walk" in the immediate vicinity by a few minutes and bring it to an hour and a half.
Step 3
When you notice that the pigeon has already got used to the immediate surroundings and always returns home, move on to longer walks. First, move the bird 200 meters to the side and release it. Make sure the pigeon returns. Gradually carry it further and further. Then take your pet 2-3 kilometers away from the dovecote and send it home. Return to the dovecote and wait for it to arrive. Repeat this exercise many times, releasing the pigeon in different places. If you are teaching a future postman, for example, to deliver mail from some point home, teach him to fly mainly in this direction.
Step 4
There is also a method of free keeping pigeons. The dovecote is constantly open and birds can fly out and come back whenever they want. But you need to switch to this technique when your pets are already used to going home from the roof. Adult birds in this case receive excellent training when they go to fetch food for chicks over long distances. The bait that makes them come back home, in this case, are babies. This method is good when there are a lot of pigeons.
