The African black ostrich is one of the most adapted bird species for growing in countries with cold climates. It tolerates temperatures up to minus 25 degrees Celsius well. Ostriches of this species live well in captivity. It is thanks to the unpretentiousness of such a bird that it can be bred for commercial purposes.
Instructions
Step 1
The room for ostriches should be high, spacious, warm, light and well ventilated. If the bird remains motionless for an extended period of time, it begins to fatten, and then lies on the floor. Since ostriches have very high blood pressure, after two days the bird's heart will not be able to maintain it at the level necessary for the bird to stand up and will have to be choked.
Step 2
In addition to housing, ostriches also need a large walking area. The walking area is designed for birds to stay outdoors. The length of the site must be at least one hundred meters, the area must be at least 250 square meters, and the height of the fence must be at least 1.8 meters. The upper part of the enclosure should be made of highly visible and durable material. Pens should be separated by aisles about two meters wide. This will eliminate contact between males and ensure the safety of humans. Since ostriches like to walk along the fence, their corners should be rounded. Never make a barbed wire fence.
Step 3
To protect birds from bad weather, build a shelter or provide free access to the stall area on the territory of the pen.
Step 4
The ostrich eats very little, an adult bird consumes about five kilograms of feed per day, and this together with roughage, like hay, grass. Food should be balanced in terms of essential nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats. The poultry diet should contain: legumes, grains, grass, apples, carrots and minerals that are contained in egg shells, shell rock.
Step 5
The process of raising ostriches is divided into 2 periods: before and after three months. Ostriches are kept in groups of different ages. Chicks up to three months are capricious, very demanding on food and living conditions. Chicks should not be released on the site if it has recently rained or dew is on the grass, as they can wet their tummies and get sick. However, adults do not mind swimming in a lake or pond.
Step 6
When the chick is three months old, it is moved under the shed. The room can be light and not heated, as the bird can withstand even mild frost. Young ostriches need to be regularly forced to move so that their limbs are well developed.
Step 7
There are three ways of breeding ostriches, which depend on the number of birds. The first method includes breeding in pairs, in this case the area for walking should be larger (for one pair there should be about 1000 square meters). If you are going to breed ostriches in triads, then there should be two females for one male. In the group breeding method, birds are enclosed in groups of 15 individuals, four females for one male.
