Step 1
There are several types of filtration systems in aquariums. The simplest filters used in small aquariums are activated carbon filters. The design of such a cleaning system consists of a primary filter sponge, on which large particles of dirt and sludge accumulate, as well as an internal cassette containing coal. In order to clean such a filter, it is necessary to carry out a number of operations. Carefully remove the filter housing from the water and let the remaining moisture drain off. Then remove the part of the housing that contains the filter sponge, remove the sponge and rinse it with plenty of running water.

The activated carbon filter cassette is usually located at the top of the filter housing. It is best to follow the instructions for use and disassemble the filtration system in accordance with it. Open the case and remove the used charcoal. Depending on the size of your filter and the volume of water that it pumps through itself every day, there are certain cleaning times and filter cassettes notes. The first few times such a cassette can be simply rinsed under running water. But after the expiration of the service life indicated on the package, it is necessary to replace the filter material with a new one.

After rinsing or completely replacing the filter cartridge and sponge, reassemble the filter and immerse it in a container of clean water. The fact is that the filter cassettes often contain pieces of dust or debris that get there during the factory assembly. Before installing a new filter in an aquarium with fish, it is necessary to rinse the filter in clean water for a while. Just immerse it in a basin or bucket of water and turn it on for 5-10 minutes.
