One of the causes of diseases in pedigree dogs is the use of closely related mating by breeders. There are also diseases that are inherent in the dachshund due to its special physique, hunting disposition and behavior. The first disease that occurs mainly in dachshunds is swimmer's syndrome. It consists in the fact that in the first few months of life, dogs crawl and cannot stand up. This primarily applies to obese puppies. Therefore, you should not overfeed them. They need to be given less salty food, more dairy products, and foods rich in vitamin E. An experienced breeder can detect swimmer's syndrome in a dachshund in the first days of life. If the ribs have a strong bend, and the chest has become flat, this should alert. But early detection of this disease is not always possible. Therefore, each dachshund puppy should be closely monitored: the earlier the disease is detected and cured, the less likely the puppy will die from compression of the lungs and heart by the chest. Treatment is carried out with calcium therapy and a special massage performed by a veterinarian. Bathing also helps. Teach your puppy to swim in warm water every day. Also, for the treatment of swimmer's syndrome, corsets are used, designed specifically for dachshund puppies.
Step 2
The second most common dachshund disease is intervertebral disc defects (discopathy). With this ailment, the dog usually whines, cannot stand up, it may experience paralysis or paresis. Most often, dogs over three years old suffer from discopathy. It also arises from a lack of calcium. Another cause of the disease is hereditary predisposition. When discopathy develops, the dog is given anti-inflammatory and pain relievers. Surgical treatment consists in carrying out a laminectomy - removal of the disc substance. Myelography is preliminary performed to confirm the diagnosis. You should contact a veterinarian when the first symptoms of discopathy appear, self-medication for this disease is unacceptable.

The third most common hereditary disease inherent in this breed is the birth of albino puppies when two marbled dachshunds are crossed. Often these puppies are born deaf or blind. To prevent the birth of such puppies, it is not recommended to cross two marbled dachshunds. To get healthy puppies, you should cross the marbled dachshund with a partner of a different color.

Due to the long body and short legs, dachshunds often suffer from cystitis. Therefore, in cold weather, the dog must definitely walk in overalls. If the disease does arise, the dachshund is treated with antibiotics and antibacterial drugs. The health of both dachshund puppies and adult dogs directly depends on the conscientiousness of the breeder. If he observes all the basic rules, tries to eradicate hereditary diseases at an early stage, the puppies will grow up healthy and strong. If the breeder is negligent about the health of puppies and adult dogs, problems arise that may take more time and money to solve than to prevent them.
