Owners of unsterilized cats sometimes notice that their pet after giving birth has no interest in their kittens. There are quite a few reasons for the lack of maternal instinct, and it depends on them whether it is worth trying to nurture the kittens further.
It is necessary
A special house for childbirth or a large box, a warm, windproof room, isolated from children and animals
Instructions
Step 1
The first and one of the main reasons why a cat can abandon kittens is their unviability. Cats, like other animals, feel when it is worth or not to fight for the life of their offspring. Most often, in such cases, the cat does not initially lick the kitten after giving birth, does not try to feed and does not show care. Most often this happens only with 1-2 kittens from a litter, especially if the litter is large. Sometimes cats can strangle an unviable kitten, this is due to their instincts (in the wild, animals nurture and feed only healthy offspring).
Step 2
A common reason why cats do not nurse newborn kittens is postpartum complications. In particular, primiparous young cats suffering from mastitis or metritis (in this case, it makes sense to immediately take the animal to the veterinarian, and feed the kittens on their own), or old cats, in which, moreover, the maternal instinct is dulled over time. In the latter case, it is better to sterilize the cat shortly after giving birth - this will allow the animal to live longer and not experience problems with the genitourinary system.
Step 3
For medical reasons, hormonal abnormalities can also be attributed. Sometimes, soon after giving birth (within 1-2 weeks), the cat begins unscheduled estrus, as a result of which she "forgets" about the kittens. Only a veterinarian can help in such cases: it is necessary to pass tests in order to exclude possible pathologies, to undergo an examination. Unfortunately, in such cases, the owners will have to fulfill all the duties of feeding the kittens (this is especially difficult, since 1-2 week old babies still do not eat solid food and it is necessary to feed them with milk from a special bottle or pipette).
Step 4
Very often, the fact that a cat does not feel cravings for kittens is influenced by people. For animals giving birth, the hustle and bustle around the process is a great stress. A lot of people, noise, light, hands constantly touching the cat and kittens - all this knocks the woman in labor out of the necessary mood, discourages the smell, and she does not feel the kittens as offspring. In order to avoid this, it is better to put the delivery box (house) in a quiet, dark place, preferably away from children, and hardly approach it until 10-14 days after delivery. It is also advisable not to let other animals (cats or dogs) in the room with a recently given birth cat. It is better for a cat to “live in” a new place in advance, 7-10 days before the expected birth, in order to feel safe.
