If you have ever attended a dog show, your gaze must have involuntarily stopped at an elegant and independent dog with long silky hair and an enigmatic expression of "oriental" eyes. This spectacular dog is most likely an Afghan Hound - exquisite and incredibly beautiful.
The history of the breed goes back to antiquity. As the legends say, the Afghan hounds were the only dogs on Noah's ark and with their long and narrow muzzles they prevented the ship from sinking by plugging them in the cracks. Images of the ancestors of the Afghan hound are found on cuneiform tablets and ancient papyri. They guarded cargo and grazed sheep, hunted both hares and leopards. For the rich they were swift-footed hunters, and for the poor they were devoted watchmen and breadwinners.
Traveling to different countries, the Afghan hound came to Russia in the mid-60s. The breed quickly gained popularity among hunters, who noted its endurance at work and hunting passion.
However, despite its hunting qualities, the Afghan hound is increasingly kept as a decorative dog. This is undoubtedly due to her bright appearance as a show dog and independence of character.
In keeping, Afghan greyhounds, with thick and long hair, require constant care, weekly washing with special shampoos. The dog is taught to this procedure from childhood, otherwise combing, drying and pulling hair will be a real test for both the owner and the animal in the future.
Like any hunting dog, the greyhound loves active games, running, long walks and jogging in the fresh air. In the company of other dogs, due to her swiftness and mobility, it is not easy for her to find a companion, therefore the owner should pay more attention to her socialization and maintain communication with the owners of a similar breed so that the pets can frolic together.
The movements of this breed are fascinating. However, greyhound running deserves special attention. Having its own unique handwriting, the greyhound does not lower its head while running, recklessly and freely overcoming the distances.
Bright individuality, independence inherent in oriental dogs. The Afghan Hound is a reliable and loyal friend who should not be brought up with methods designed for the "average" dog. Outwardly arrogant, in fact, Afghan hounds are very cheerful and mischievous. When properly maintained and cared for, they will give you a lot of fun and enjoyable moments.
