Since the first warm spring days, all veterinary clinics are flooded with cats that have fallen from the window. Most often, cat owners say that the animal has always liked to look at the street from an open window and has never made an attempt to jump out. In fact, a cat's calm attitude to what is happening on the street does not guarantee that it will never fall out of the window. What should the owners do, whose animal has fallen from a great height?
In the warm season, it gets hot in the apartment, and city dwellers happily open their windows, enjoying sunny days. Domestic cats love to sit near the windows and watch what happens outside the apartment. Unfortunately, cute baleen animals living with people do not have the fear of falling from a height, because they do not have to face in everyday life the need to descend from a distance of more than 2 meters. At the same time, the hunting instinct in domestic cats is unusually strong and they can recklessly jump out of the window, trying to reach the bird or butterfly.
The cat fell out of the window: the first actions of the owner
If the owner of the cat still did not keep track, and his pet fell out of the window, it is necessary to urgently take her to the veterinary hospital. For a maximum of two hours after a fall, in most cases the cat's life can still be saved. If there is a suspicion that the pet may have fractures of the limbs or spine, then in no case should it be put in a bag or carrier. It should be as careful as possible, without changing the position of the animal's body, place it on a flat, solid horizontal surface - for example, a wide board covered with a blanket - and so take it to the veterinarian.
If the cat is injured and there is open bleeding, then you need to treat the wound with any disinfectant solution and apply a tourniquet over the wound - if the wound is on the limb, of course. After that, take the animal to a doctor immediately. Even if the cat has no visible damage and it looks only a little scared, it may have bruises of its internal organs - any pathology can be excluded only through examination by an experienced veterinarian.
The most dangerous injuries in a cat that fell from a window
Often, an animal that fell into the street from a window receives bruises and fractures - most often the front legs and spine are broken. The main danger lies in the fact that if a cat receives several injuries at the same time, it experiences a traumatic shock, which can lead to its instant death. In many cases, the consequence of a cat falling from a height is the divergence of its upper palate. As a result, a message appears between the mouth and nose of the cat, which must be sutured.
If the bladder of a cat that has fallen out of a window is full, it can burst from hitting the ground. The result is peritonitis and rapid death of the animal from intoxication with nitrogen metabolism products.
In any case, the responsibility for the safety of the cat lies entirely with its owners. They should take care in advance of installing a strong mesh on the window or not opening the windows at all, if they do not want to be the culprit behind the painful death of their pet.
