Syrian hamsters are one of the most calm and beautiful representatives of rodents. They have a variety of colors, the most famous of which is gold. Caring for these animals is quite simple.
Cell
In the wild, hamsters can have a wide area of residence, so when choosing a cage for them, focus only on large enough ones. There are many different cell shapes. Perhaps the most expensive of these is a special hamster cage with artificial burrows. There can be several such cells. By connecting them, you can create a fairly extensive network of holes.
If you are not ready to spend money on special cells, you can limit yourself to a traditional product. Conventional cages have their advantages, they are quite easy to clean and convenient to transport. However, keep in mind that the size of the cage must be large enough. Try to choose a tall model, perhaps several stories high. The Syrian hamster is a very active animal, it will gladly climb up the walls. Do not restrict its movement to a simple jogging wheel.
Arrangement
In the wild, the hamster is constantly in search of food, this makes him actively move. The easiest thing you can do for him is to install a wheel in which he will run. Please note that the Syrian hamster can be quite large (up to 25 cm), so choose the appropriate wheel size.
If you do not use a special cage with artificial burrows, you can make them yourself from available tools. Similar norms can be made, for example, from a piece of cardboard.
Food
In the wild, Syrian hamsters most often feed on cereals and seeds. You can use special food for this, which is sold in pet stores. You can also use fresh foods such as cauliflower, carrots or corn to feed your hamster. Hamsters also enjoy eating apples, bananas, cucumbers, dandelion leaves, melons and other foods.
There are also a number of foods that you shouldn't feed your hamster. Such products include: raw potatoes, apple and grape seeds, seeds of any fruit, confectionery, watermelon, oranges, tangerines, etc.
Diseases and treatment
Syrian hamsters are strong enough animals, they rarely get sick. However, there are a number of symptoms that you must pay attention to. For example, a wet tail indicates that a hamster has diarrhea. In the most severe forms, it is observed in rodents up to 2, 5 months old. If you find a similar symptom in your pet, immediately contact your veterinarian, he will prescribe the necessary medications for treatment. Seeking professional help is especially important if the hamster is still young (several months). At this age, there is a high probability of death.
If you keep your hamster's cage in the sun, for example, on a windowsill, build a shelter in it, otherwise the hamster may get heatstroke. You can cure it yourself by wrapping your hamster in a towel soaked in cool water. If this does not help, see your veterinarian.
Be careful if you notice that the hamster is motionless. Quite often this is due to the fact that he goes into deep hibernation. This happens if the temperature drops below 5 degrees. To wake up your hamster, hold it in your hands and hold it for 10 minutes. In the future, try to keep the temperature in the room at the level of 10 - 25 degrees.
