Chihuahuas are tiny dogs found in the state of Chihuahua (Mexico), which were then introduced to various countries. This is the smallest dog breed in the world. The ancestor of modern chihuahuas is the techichi dog, which was known for 1, 5 thousand years BC. Maya and Aztecs considered techichi sacred. Later, this dog was crossed with a Chinese crested, getting short-haired individuals. The ancestors of modern Chihuahuas were introduced to Europe in the 18th century.
What does a Chihuahua mini look like?
In fact, there is no such breed as the Chihuahua Mini. If you hear about dwarf or miniature Chihuahuas, then they are trying to deceive you. A female may have puppies of different sizes in the same litter. It depends on the health of the mother, on the characteristics of intrauterine development, on hereditary and acquired after birth diseases, on the quality and quantity of food and on many other factors. Selling you a Chihuahua-mini, the breeder is well aware that he is giving you either an unhealthy puppy, or the most ordinary representative of the Chihuahua breed, who will soon catch up with the size of his “fellow tribesmen”.
Chihuahuas are fearless dogs with excellent reaction and lively character. The main feature of the breed is a small apple-shaped skull. Such dogs often hold their tail high (usually in the form of a semicircle or curved). A tail curled below the back or drooping between the legs is considered unacceptable for the breed standard. The body of Chihuahua males resembles a square, while in bitches it is more stretched. The rib cage is wide, the ribs are rounded. Chihuahua's eyes are dark, large, round and very expressive. The ears of these dogs are large, wide at the base and narrowed to the tips, far apart. Chihuahua's paws are small, but the muscles of the hind limbs are very developed.
The disadvantages of this breed include:
- too long body;
- wrong bite;
- too thin, long and fluttering coat (even in long-haired ones);
- bald patches (in smooth-haired);
- open fontanelle;
- too aggressive behavior;
- pointed ears;
- underweight (less than 500 grams) or overweight (over 3 kilograms).
Chihuahua character traits
Those who are going to have a Chihuahua should remember that dogs of this breed cannot live in the same apartment or house with small children. It is not excluded that the child, overplaying, seriously injures the animal. And the dogs themselves are not too happy when they see a small person in front of them. The peculiarity of the breed is also that the dog needs constant supervision (especially at a tender age).
Chihuahuas are naughty. These are noisy and domineering dogs who consider themselves the masters of the house. There are cases when tiny Chihuahuas completely subjugated Rottweilers and boxers. It is not easy to train willful Chihuahuas, and first of all to wean off barking at any object and rushing at strangers. On the other hand, the Chihuahua is an ideal "glamorous" dog that you can take with you for walks, carrying it in a special bag. Representatives of this breed do not mind sleeping next to the owner both day and night. It is also important that Chihuahuas are quite comfortable even in a small apartment: they do not need space and constant physical activity in nature. Chihuahuas are emotionally attached to 1-2 people who are in constant contact with them, and are ready to literally give their lives for the owner if they feel a physical threat. Such dogs require constant attention and contact.
