Sometimes it is necessary to find out the age of a dog without having data on the origin and documents on hand. This is especially important when buying an animal for breeding activity, since by the age of 10, the ability to reproduce is significantly reduced. You can determine the age of a dachshund or any other dog by external signs.
Instructions
Step 1
Examine the dog, if you notice gray hair in the chin and lips, most likely, it has already crossed the 7-year-old milestone. Keep in mind that gray hair also spreads over the years to the forehead and the entire muzzle of the dog.
Step 2
Pay attention to the eyes, they sink with age and seem deep-set, the back becomes soft and the belly sinks. Look at the coat, in the old dog it is dull and tousled, while in the young it is smooth and silky.
Step 3
The surest way to find out the age of a dachshund is to examine its teeth. Towards the night, when the dog is tired and in a sleepy and well-fed mood, slowly walk up to it and part your lips so that you can see your teeth, open your jaw. Try not to touch your nose, dogs don't like this. After the inspection, do not forget to give the dachshund a treat so that she associates it with something pleasant.
Step 4
Look how many teeth a dog has, a healthy normal dachshund has all its permanent teeth per year, they are still fresh, shiny and white. In the period from 18 months to 2 years, the lower hooks are erased, at two and a half years you can notice that the middle incisors of the lower jaw are erased, note that at this age the teeth have become duller and not so shiny.
Step 5
Try to determine the age by the canines: at the age of 5 they wear off and become dull, by the age of 6 they become covered with tartar at the base and turn yellow, and at the age of 7-8 the dachshund's canines are already completely dull, yellow and compressed from the sides.
Step 6
If you see that the hooks of the lower jaw have taken back an oval shape, feel free to conclude that the dog is over 7 years old. Please note that the lower middle incisors take the same shape at 8-9 years old, and the upper jaw hooks at 9-10 years old.
Step 7
Remember that a dog's teeth begin to fall out from the age of 10-12. At this age, the dog, most likely, can no longer be a producer, vision and hearing are weakened.
